I LOVE THIS COMPOSTER

I looked long and hard for a composter. One of my personal restrictions was size as I have a very small area in which to make my compost and it is on cement, not dirt. - I live in a condo
Note that in my research I was also looking for one for work that did not have the size restrictions. We since have acquired (gifted) another larger unit we also use at work but the Envirocycle remains in full production along side that one.
After the looking and looking for a period of about a year I found and and bought the Envirocycle for myself at home and one for my work place. Let me say I couldn't be more pleased. It takes up so little space yet produces BEAUTIFUL compost in short order- just as it promised. I use mine for kitchen scraps as well as plant waste. All brake down nicely and only some of the larger items are sifted out and need longer to make a mature compost. I do live in Southern California so extreme cold is not a problem, however in my internet searches of blogs etc. I have seen quite a few of these in pretty cold climates. They either use them in covered areas, a garage or basements in the winter. This unit is very easy to move - even when full. All you need to do is roll it off it's base then on to it's destination. There were other insulating methods used but since I didn't need that I did read further.
This composter also has the SUPER COOL added benefit of collecting compost tea which for any gardener is a MAJOR BONUS. This was one factor that contributed a great deal in my decision to buy this product. Another reviewer had theirs leak - unfortunate. (wonder if the cap was on tight enough?) I have not had (or read about) any problems with leakage, which is not to say it doesn't happen. - I'm just saying, I know of, or own 6 of these units and I have read post of countless others- I remember no leaking mentioned. Now not everyone collects the tea (although I can't comprehend why one wouldn't) - if you don't want to collect the tea you simply leave the plugs (that come installed) in the unit. This keeps the bottom of the unit sealed. Done! no tea- no leaking. One thing I did do after the first year or so is elevate the unit on some cinder blocks. I found that by doing this I can harvest the tea more easily and there is no need to remove the drum to pour the content of the reservoir. As an added bonus it's easier to turn a little higher. I should also say that these bins are easy to turn or "tumble" even when fully loaded. Really good design. My only complaint was the opening for the compost tea is inset- not good for getting out all the tea as it is not lowest spot for the liquid to collect. I see on their newest version that has been changed. For me that would not be not a deal breaker though-

I now have 2 of these and as I said really couldn't be happier. You can buy two of these units for less than most any other 2 compartment tumblers. These are made of Recycled Plastic, for me another bonus!!, and thy are recyclable at the end of their life span.
I've had my first Envirocycle Tumbler for at least 2 years now and it shows very little wear or signs of aging. The one we have at work does show some signs of aging but it has been left in full sun all day, everyday - all year (not the best idea).
Additionally, I later found information on this company and have since had dealings with them and they are REALLY, REALLY GREAT. The drum for my second unit that I purchased was warped. I didn't even notice until I filled it and tried to turn it. By that time I'd had the unit for 4 or 5 months (or more) as I was re-doing the garden are and had not set it up yet. I contacted the company (through the seller)and they replace the faulty drum immediately- no questions asked. I did not have to go through hoops or return the old one. They just sent me a new drum at no cost to me. The only thing they asked of me was to recycle the old drum- I now use the old drum to store compost as I empty my units if I don't need it right away so I can free them up to start a new batches! They seem to truly believe in doing good for the planet. You can check them out at envirocyclesystems.com
I recommend this product to anyone who composts or wants to start- seasoned or newbies
That's not garbage that's food for my plants!

| This is a very efficient and effective composter. It's easy to fill it and tumble the contents. I love not adding to the landfills and have enjoyed seeing the 'fruits' of my composting labor returned to earth on my veggie garden this year. Excellent 'green' machine. |
Couldn't be easier.

| What a great composter. I roll it every few days and when it's done, roll it off the stand to wherever it's needed. No shovelling deep down into a barrel. This one does all the work. As my neighbor grunts and groans and has to deal with a wheelbarrow, I just roll along. |

| This is a great teaching tool for kids. Teaching about how much we waste & useful ways to re-use. I can't wait to get in the garden with the kids & watch their amazement when we use the compost. Having the composter has made fewer trips to the garbage can for sure. If you are wondering whether or not this is worth your money--it is worth it & you will not be sorry you bought one. |
Works as advertised. A good unit!

As the description says: "Compact, durable and user-friendly"... that about sums it up. I can't really imagine paying the same amount for basically a plastic (or wooden) box that requires extra work to keep things stirred up. Just fill it and spin it, if it loaded itself it would be perfect! The "tea" catcher is also a big perk in my book.
About the only thing I would like would be to have it a little bigger (not everyone would need that though...) |
good purchase

| We like this very convenient composter. It keeps rodents, skunks and snakes from access to the compost and is easy to use. The preparation of compost takes a bit longer than advertised (8-10 weeks is about right). |

| I own two of these units (I alternate while I'm waiting for a load to finish). I am quite happy with them and would purchase another. I like the spinning function, but as the bin gets full it can be very difficult to spin. Once the compost starts to break down, it gets even heavier. The finger ridges are hard to grip. Be careful when placing it that the unit is sitting on level ground so that the drum doesn't come off the base when you spin it. It would be difficult to relocate once loaded. That being said, I had never composted before and I was able to use it to process all of my vegetable and fruit scraps without any problem. I have not had any problems with unwanted pests getting into it. |

The unit is compact and ideal for smaller gardens. When full, it does get a little hard to turn but I guess that is to be expected due to being 1/2 full of moist compost matter. We have not had the unit long enough to produce and use any "compost tea". In my opinion, this unit is ideal for myself, the urban home gardener!

I got this after looking at a bunch of options. I initially ordered 2 thinking I would fill one and allow the other to fully compost, but it's actually pretty hard to fill one of these up if you don't have acres of grass, hordes of leaves, and a bunch of scrap food. For our family of 3 I think it will take us a good 4 months to get it full and things will take time to break down and turn into something I'd want to use on my veggies. I added some soil but think it would be a waste of $ to add 'activator'. I'd glad I only got the 1. It's pretty big and my backyard would look silly with 2 of them.
Pros-
Easy to rotate and fill. (Not sure how easy it is to empty because I haven't completed a batch yet.
Cons-
The latch is really small weak and flimsy looking. I'm worried it will break and I'll end up having to duct tape the door shut.
$$$$ kinda pricey for essentially a big plastic rotator. I think a trash can with holes poked in the bottom would be just as good and there's no reason why you can't just fill it with compost material and wait until it decomposes. I think the rotating issue is overrated when you're producing household waste from a small family (there's plenty of air already in the container!)
Overall, I would still buy this because it looks better than a trash can, but if my latch breaks I will not be happy. |
Nice and compact

This compost bin works well, is easy to roll, and the tea catcher is a nice plus. The only reason I didn't give it all 5 stars is because the bin lid closes with a plastic latch that easily comes undone. Make sure to check the latch is in place or you'll be surprised when the compost somes flying out when you spin the bin!
I also placed this bin on raised pavers so I could easily tip the tea catcher into a pail. Otherwise 5 gallons can get really heavy when the tea catcher is full. |
